Going back to school - finally…
Hello all:
Well….its finally going to happen… I’m finally going to get to go back to school. Unfortunately, my wife didn’t find a job that allows me to quit mine and go back to school full time, so I’m going to be attending community college. However, they do offer religion courses there. So, I will be taking courses on the History of Christianity, and The Bible as Literature. I’ll probably also take a criminal justice course or something as well.
Also, I am going to be taking over the teaching of the teens in my congregation. They want to study World Religions, Denominational Doctrines, Apologetics, and the distinctive beliefs of the churches of Christ. I’m looking forward to it, it should be fun.

Clarke,
Congrats! Where will you be attending? What will your major be?
Teaching the teens is also a great privilege.

Congrats, thats awesome. I do not know how old you are but I am 27 and am getting out of the military in 1.5 years. I will be going back to school for the first time in 9 years….very nervous, I will be going full-time while my wife provides financially for the family. Thats pretty neat that the community college offers courses on relgion, I do not know of any community colleges around here that offer such. Teaching the teens? Thats really good. That is one thing I would love to do. My church however has a youth minister, a deacon as well as many helpers.

Congratulations Clarke! I recently completed school (on the Chris Farley extended plan) and it was a great experience. Be careful with the Bible as Literature and History of Christianity courses. They tend to be taught by either disaffected ministers/priests or professors who look at the Bible as nothing more than allegory. It’s difficult holding discussions with people who view Scripture as nothing more than a bunch of nice stories. That said, it can be a great opportunity to present the gospel in a compelling manner if you have a professor who is willing to have discussion and isn’t forcing an agenda.

Right now I’ll just be going to Clackamas Community College. I don’t know if I’ll be persuing a degree with them or not. I was persuing a degree in Emergency Management with them but since I’m planning on getting out of the public safety field, I haven’t persued it further. I’m close to being done with those classes, though, and so I could use these classes I’m going to take along with my general education and get a degree fairly quickly.
What my current plan is is to persue a degree in Public Safety and Human Justice from Southern Christian University. That degree is made for people working in Criminal Justice, but is a Bible Degree in disguise, and is set up to admit you into graduate school. We’ll see.
J.P.:
I’ll be 27 in a few months. I’ve taken a few classes since I dropped out of college, but they were all online, and they’ve all been pretty easy. Stepping back into a real classrom and having to write papers and such is something I’m nervous about, but I’m excited too. When I go back to school full time I’m planning on doing what you’re doing, which is having my wife work full time. She’s looking for a job that pays what mine does,m and hopefully she’ll find one soon. If she doesn’t get hired soon, she’ll probably hit the books for a few months to get a certificate so that its easier for her to get a job.
Adam:
Thanks for the words of warning. I’m planning on taking anything I learn there with a grain of salt or three. I’m glad that I’ll be learning in this enviornment so that I can learn how others view the bible. I think it will be easier to teach others when I know where they are coming from.

Let me know how Southern Christian works out. That is top on my list for distant learning and I plan on making my decision shortly. This whole thing is tough having a full-time job, a full-time family and a little 2.5 yr old girl runnning around the house like she just drank a pot of coffee.
