Hello everyone:
I finished up “Distant Voices” and I really enjoyed it….so, I picked up another of C. Leonard Allen’s (along with Richard Hughes, this time) books, “Discovering our Roots: The Ancestry of Churches of Christ.”
If you’ve not read this book, pick it up. It provides some really great backgound on Restorationist thought in Christianity that occured before our movement began and which had great influences on our movement.
The best irony I’ve found so far is that alot of our restorationist roots came from the Puritans…who were later known as Congregationalists….who later merged with some other churches and formed the United Church of Christ. Its quite amazing how belief changes over time.

Clark,
I’m in the middle of reading America’s God, written by Mark Noll. Though he doesn’t focus on the Restoration Movement, he writes about how republicanism heavily influenced the way Christians in America speak about and live the faith. It’s a fascinating read if you get the opportunity.

You are right, it is totally amazing what became of the Puritans. That subject is also addressed in The Churching of America (1776-2005) Very fascinating.

Thanks for the book suggestions. I’m definatly interested in reading about Christianity and how it has been effected by politics.
I’m also curious about what happened to the puritans. I know that not all the Congregational churches merged into the UCC. Guess I’ll have to check out the rest of the story.
